About Bucky
Bucky
was first drawn in 1940 by professional illustrator Art Evans of Garden
Grove, California. In 1949, the mascot first came alive when a student
first wore a badger outfit, consisting of a paper mache head, at the
homecoming game. Bucky's birthday is designated to be October 2 because
on October 2, 1940, Bucky's look was copyrighted. The badger started as
the offical University of Wisconsin mascot in 1889. The original, live
badger was too vicious to control and, on more than one occasion,
escaped handlers and had be recaptured, or tackled, on the sidelines.
It was decided in the safety of fans and players that the badger would
be retired to the Madison Zoo. The university's yearbook staff replaced
the live badger with a raccoon named Regdab, or badger spelled
backwards, and called it a "badger in a raccoon coat." In 1949, Connie
Conrad molded a paper mache head and a gymnast and cheerleader, Bill
Segal, was commissioned to wear the outfit at the homecoming game. He
went by many names, including: Benny, Buddy, Bernie, Bobby, and
Bouncey. Eventually, a contest was staged to name their mascot, and the
winner was Buckingham U. Badger, or Bucky for short.
