About Sparty
The first 'Sparties' have been popping up since around the 1950s as papermache heads wore by fraternity members. The first official Sparty mascot debuted in 1955, courtesy of Theta XI.  In 1984, a 'gruff' version was introduced, having an unshaven chin. This Sparty can still be seen on some sweatshirts and jackets. The current Sparty, however, is well shaved. The uniform is made of different materials, including a vinyl chest plate and fiberglass molds (like the ones used for making the Muppets). The seven-foot high costume weighs in at forty pounds. This allows enough flexibility for animation and gestures. The cost? Twelve thousand dollars. The Sparty Mascot Program is run and funded by the Student Alumni Foundation, and today students, their identities kept a secret (of course), take turns being Sparty. Candidates must be between 5'10" and 6'2", because of the size of the costume. Those who fit the physical needs are chosen after a hands-on process that includes tryouts and interviews.

Sparty's Titles
Sparty the Spartan has won three national championship's in the last four years at the Universal Cheer Association's mascot competition held at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. His first title was claimed in January of 2004, when Sparty became the first Big Ten mascot to win the national title. In 2005, he beat out Goldy Gopher and Bucky Badger to defend his title. He reclaimed the natinal championship again in 2007 after finishing third in 2006.
